Outreach
Throughout the year, HKN hosts a wide range of events designed to engage students and the general public alike in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science, to provide a glimpse into EECS life at UC Berkeley, and to give back to our wonderful local community. Come learn how to make a programmable LED array, or how to write your own facial recognition algorithms with HKN; no prior experience necessary!

Taking place every Fall, EECS Day is our annual open house, providing prospective students in high-school and their parents with an opportunity to learn firsthand what it is like to study EECS at UC Berkeley. The day’s activities typically include a department tour, various hands-on EECS workshops and demos, and the chance to speak to UC Berkeley professors and students on their personal experiences. For those not yet in high school but are still eager to learn about EECS at Cal, HKN hosts Junior EECS Day.

Additional Resources

BearHacks is a day-long event for high-school students, especially those with limited EECS experience, to come to UC Berkeley and simply make something of their own. A showcase is held at the end of the day, giving attendees the chance to demo their creations to fellow students and parents. Students can choose from one of our starter projects, or work on anything of their choice; in either case, experienced HKN members will be glad to offer individualized guidance and support throughout the day.

Cal Day is UC Berkeley’s free annual public open house, and HKN will be holding drop-in introductory EECS workshops for campus visitors. In past years, our hands-on workshop projects have included creating a programmable LED array that could flash in different patterns using a MSP430 microcontroller, or a blinking LED controlled by a 555 timer IC chip.

Annual, Spring Semester

Unfortunately, Cal Day has been cancelled this semester as part of campus policies regarding COVID-19.
